Our Lady Help of Christians parish was founded on December 8, 1953, on the eve of the upcoming Marian Year in 1954. Cardinal John O’Hara, Archbishop of Philadelphia at the time, designated the name in preparation for the Marian Year. Mass was first celebrated at the present-day rectory is located. The school and convent were then constructed. Mass was celebrated in the school gym until the completion of the Church which was in November of 1963. Cardinal John Krol, who was then the archbishop, presided over the dedication of the Church. The area where the Church, rectory, school and now annex are located on what was originally called Folly Farms. In recognition of the founding and dedication, the original Folly Road was changed to Marian Road. The original part of the rectory dates to 1819. Monsignor Joseph Shallow was the founding pastor, followed by Msgr. Clement Bennington and Father Joseph Bowen. Father Anthony Janton is the 4 th and present pastor.
The Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross were the original teachers in the school until 1968 when the Sisters of St. Joseph took over along with a lay faculty. The school was joined with St. David School in Willow Grove in 2013 and was made a regional school and named Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School. Presently Regina Coeli Academy rents our school facilities.
In December of 2023, we observed the 70 th anniversary of the founding of the parish and the 60 th anniversary of the dedication of the Church. A special Mass was celebrated by our Archbishop, Archbishop Nelson Perez, and a reception followed in the school gym.
